Acupressure in Ngải's therapy

From Ngải · 3-min read

Therapeutic acupressure at Ngải Spa

In a Ngải treatment, acupressure is the step where the therapist finds the tightest points and works deep into them. This is where skilled hands make the difference between a pleasant massage and one that truly reaches the root of the tension.

How does acupressure work?

The body has points that, when pressed the right way, help release a knotted muscle and let circulation return. Ngải's therapists use the strength of fingers and hands to press and knead deep into these points, reaching the muscle layer beneath rather than gliding over the surface of the skin.

The first feeling can be an intense "good ache" at the tight points, then easing as the muscle lets go — a sign the knot is being released.

Why Ngải pairs acupressure with moxibustion

Ngải rarely uses acupressure on its own. Beforehand, the herbal soak and moxibustion have softened the muscles and warmed the area, so the therapist's hands can reach deeper more easily and you feel more comfortable. Steps that flow into one another like this are exactly what gives the Ngải therapy its character.

Can you do acupressure at home?

You can, on a small scale — pressing the point between thumb and index finger, or working slowly along the back of the neck, does help a tired body. What you can't do at home is reach the deep knots along the shoulder blade and the spine: they need someone else's hands, at an angle your own arm cannot take.

Who is acupressure for?

Especially good for anyone whose neck, shoulders and back tighten from long hours of sitting — or who simply wants a deep session to let the body breathe. The therapist adjusts the pressure to how you feel, so do say if you'd like it lighter or deeper.

A few small things to know

If you're pregnant, recently had surgery, or have broken skin anywhere, tell your therapist before you start — the session is adjusted around it.

Ngải Signature and Office Therapy both include an acupressure step by a skilled therapist.
